I am attempting to lodge a Trust Tax Return but receive the error message: "ABN is mandatory when lodging as a trustee" preventing me from lodging the return. Why is this occurring?
Solution
The ATO has stated the following:
- The electronic lodgement of Trust Tax Returns are only available if an ABN is recorded.
Trust tax returns can only be electronically lodged when an ABN has been added in Simple Invest 360.
If an ABN isn't available, the tax return will need to be downloaded and lodged with ATO manually.
Add ABN to Trust / Trustee
The Trust ABN can be entered in the Trust Details screen:
When lodging the Tax Return as a Trustee, the ABN will need to be added to the lodging party contact.
- Locate which contact is added as a Lodging Party for your Trust:

| Select Lodging Party. |

- Determine which Lodging Party shown is attached to your trust.
You can view attached trusts by selecting the Lodging Party, then clicking "Entities Selector":
If the lodging party hasn't been added yet, make sure to add a lodging party first.
- Next, navigate to the contacts screen:

| Select Contacts. |

- Search for and select the Lodging Party Contact attached to your trust.
- Enter the Contact's ABN in the relevant field, then click Save Changes:
Print from the Tax Return screen
Before downloading the Tax Return from Simple Invest 360, ensure to fill out all necessary sections.
Once completed, the tax return can be downloaded by selecting print in the bottom-right corner:
- Make sure to select all required sections of the tax return before selecting Preview Reports:

The Trust Tax Return can also be downloaded from the Reports screen.
You will need to ensure all necessary sections are completed in the tax return prior to download.

1. Search for Trust Tax Return using the Search Report bar. Alternatively, locate the Trust Tax Return under Financial Reports.
2. Add the Trust Tax Return to the Report Pack by selecting the Add To Pack arrow.
3. Users can then preview or download the Tax Return as a PDF:
